A large fire broke out in Beirut port, a month after a catastrophic explosion of some 2,750 mt of long-stored ammonium nitrate at the port killed more than 180 people and injured thousands (GM Aug. 7, p. 1).
Initial reports indicated that the fire started at a warehouse that has oil and tire deposits, the Lebanese Army said on Thursday, Sept. 10, according to Bloomberg. Firefighters and army helicopters were used to extinguish the fire, which Al Arabiya said was under control on Thursday. The Red Cross in Lebanon said there was no danger of an explosion, LBCI Lebanon News reported.
Just a week ago, the Lebanese military found another 4.35 mt of ammonium nitrate near the port and were dealing with it (GM Sept. 3, p. 32).
