Uralkali Launches Pilot Project to Use Renewable Energy Sources

Uralkali PJSC, Moscow, said it has launched another pilot project to use electricity from renewable energy sources.

Through its partnership with PJSC Fortum, which is a part of Fortum Corp., a leading electricity supplier and developer of intellectual solutions in energy efficiency, Uralkali will use electricity generated by solar power plants located in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic and Orenburg region for its industrial facilities.

Uralkali said it is currently developing its own climate strategy aimed at reducing the company’s carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. It said the solar power project will help the company to gain “unique experience in using sustainable sources of energy for the production of potash fertilizers.”

In October, the company purchased a small amount of hydropower as part of a similar pilot.
