A blown tire on a trailer caused an anhydrous ammonia leak just east of Fort Dodge, Iowa, on July 5, according to The Messenger. The tire caused the NEW Cooperative Inc. pickup and trailer to wreck, with the crash causing damage to the tank’s pressure release valve.
Fire crews were on the scene for nearly three hours cleaning up the spill, according to local fire chief, who said it was a “lot of luck” that the driver was not injured and was able to escape. Photos of the scene showed a sizeable leak. “We were fortunate that this one was a small tank and there were no residences nearby,” added Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener.
