Fertilizer Plant Fire, Explosion Threat, Leads to Safety Fine

A safety inspection stemming from the Winston Weaver Co. fertilizer plant fire in Winston-Salem, N.C. (GM Feb. 4, p. 1) has resulted in the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Division proposing a $5,600 file against the company, according to Bloomberg Law.

The Jan. 31 fire and threat of a massive ammonium nitrate-based explosion led to a three-day evacuation that was called by Winston-Salem city officials for 6,000 people living within a mile of the plant.

The state workplace agency on Aug. 1 said it cited Winston Weaver for keeping ammonium nitrate in buildings with leaky roofs, allowing for water contamination, and storing the chemical in wooden bins that did not prevent contamination from adjacent chemicals.

Winston Weaver did not immediately respond to a request to discuss the citation or whether the firm would appeal the citation.
