Malaysia to Invest $1.3 B in Low-Carbon Project

The Malay government announced plans to invest in a new low-carbon nitrogen plant at Bintulu in the Sarawak region. The project, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study, will be led by Sarawak Petchem and the plant will be commissioned in 2030, according to the announcement.

An MoU for gas supply was signed on July 22 with Petros. Under the MoU, Petros plans to supply 160 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas to the low-carbon ammonia and urea plant.

“The project is in line with the country’s green energy agenda to reduce carbon emission intensity for a sustainable energy future,” said Petros CEO Dato Janin Girie.

Incorporated in 2017, Sarawak Petchem owns and operates the region’s first mega-methanol plant in Sarawak. The plant has an annual capacity of 5,000 MTPA of methanol.

Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) is a state-owned oil and gas exploration firm. In 2020, Petros took full control of natural gas supply, sales, and distribution network in the state from Petronas.
