Houston-based KBR has been awarded a conceptual study contract for floating blue ammonia from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders headquartered in South Korea. The study will utilize KBR’s blue ammonia technology, which is suitable for offshore production, while leveraging SHI’s expertise in the design of floating vessels.
KBR has announced several initiatives in the low-carbon ammonia space recently, including a collaboration on ammonia production technologies with Clariant, a chemicals company based in Switzerland (GM Aug. 2, p. 25). KBR’s technology was also selected for use at the Shell Blue Horizons plant in Duqm, Oman (GM July 26, p. 25), the Fortescue Holmaneset green ammonia plant in Norway (GM April 26, p. 26), and the El Nasr Company fertilizer complex in Egypt (GM April 5, p. 25).
