An anhydrous ammonia leak that occurred early on April 25 in the northern Chicago suburb of Beach Park, Ill., has sent 37 people to the hospital, with seven listed in critical but stable condition as of 12:40 p.m. CST, according to the Associated Press.
Wire reports said the leak occurred at about 4:30 a.m. from a container that was being transported by a tractor. Those hospitalized reportedly include 11 firefighters and three police officers who responded to the scene. Residents within a one-mile radius of the leak were initially told to close their windows and remain indoors, but that order was lifted a few hours later, the AP reported. Schools in the area remain closed.
CVR Partners LP, Sugar Land, Texas, reported a 16.5 percent drop in first-quarter UAN sales volumes though prices were up. Ammonia sales were stable versus year-ago levels. Citing current good movement and high corn acreage expectations, CVR is optimistic about the second quarter. Company-wide, CVR posted a $6.1 million loss, an improvement over the year-ago loss of $19 million.
While fertilizer movement picked up in late March and April, Martin Midstream Partners LP, Kilgore, Texas, reported a 24 percent drop in first-quarter fertilizer sales volumes. Operating income was down in the company’s Sulfur Services segment, as well as company-wide, with MMLP posting a net loss of $3.6 million down from year-ago net income of $15 million.

Sirius Minerals plc, Scarborough, England, today announced it has reached an exclusive 10-year supply and distribution agreement with European agri-business group, BayWa Agri Supply & Trade B.V. (BAST), a wholly-owned subsidiary of BayWa AG, based in Munich, for the distribution of Poly4 into Europe. Sirius said the deal is for guaranteed minimum volumes ramping up to 2.5 million mt/y in year five, taking the polyhalite developer’s aggregate peak contracted sales volume to 10.7 million mt/y – or some 12.1 million mt/y with customer options.
