Muskegon fertilizer appeal turned down

Lansing, Mich.-The Michigan Dept. of Agriculture has decided Muskegon County hasn’t made a case for taking over authority for the sale of fertilizer in its jurisdiction, according to state officials. “They just didn’t provide sufficient evidence at this time for us to proceed with a public meeting (on the issue),” April Hunt, state fertilizer and bulk storage manager, told Green Markets. “We’re going to wait to see if they have more data (to support their case).” She said county officials had been notified by letter and that the state would welcome the resolution to be resubmitted with more information detailing how the state law impacts their communities. She said the county still has control over use of fertilizer and could still achieve the objective of protecting waterways in the areas. Muskegon’s petition was focused on getting a public hearing to convince officials that the state law conflicts with county interests.
