Tuscola, Ill..-Douglas County is moving ahead with plans to add a half-cent to the sales tax to beef up its public safety force, but the agriculture community doesn’t have to worry about paying any more. Officials say the additional revenue could be used for crime prevention, the county jail, more police protection, and firefighting, medical, ambulance, or other emergency services. Groceries, prescription and nonprescription drugs, farm machinery, seeds, chemicals, and fertilizer would be exempt. The county board approved a draft resolution to put the increase on the ballot next Feb. 5 and will adopt the final wording Oct. 17.
