CF in hunt for Peruvian gas

Deerfield, Ill.-CF Industries Holdings Inc. has confirmed that it is also in the hunt for Peruvian natural gas, as is Terra Industries Inc. (GM Oct. 29, p. 1). The press in Latin America has also identified other contenders as Protexa of Mexico, Enaex of Chile, a consortium lead by India’s Oswal Chemicals & Fertilizers, and Petrobras of Brazil in partnership with Petroperu, the Peruvian state-owned oil company. All of these bidders are reportedly eyeing some sort of nitrogen complex except for Protexa, which is looking at methanol, according to local reports. CF Chairman and CEO Stephen Wilson addressed CF’s continued desire to expand and diversify to analysts last week, though not mentioning the Peruvian opportunity. He touted the company’s recent acquisition of a stake in Keytrade and reiterated that the company wants to stay within its core competencies, within one degree of separation of what it does now.
