Washington, D.C.-The Fertilizer Institute on Nov. 13 named the Michigan Agri-Business Association (MABA) as a recipient of its performance-based grant program aimed at assisting state and regional fertilizer associations as they engage with government officials, the agriculture community, and key stakeholders on nutrient use issues. MABA will host a workshop with state legislators and staff Dec 3 in Lansing, Mich., on the use of phosphorus and its importance for a healthy lawn. “Fertilizer, especially phosphorus, has received a lot of negative attention, resulting in several lawn bans across the country,” said TFI President Ford West. “Bringing this issue, sound science and expert witnesses to elected officials is a smart move for our industry, and we commend MABA for its efforts to organize this event.” MABA joins the Delaware Maryland Agribusiness Association (DMAA), the Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association (IFCA), Penn Ag Industries Association (Penn Ag), and the Virginia Agribusiness Council (VAC) as 2007 grant recipients. As the projects progress, each recipient will submit progress reports. TFI said grant applications from state and regional associations will continue to be reviewed as they are received. Grant criteria and additional information on the program is available from TFI Director of Government Relations Bob Tadsen via e-mail at rtadsen@tfi.org, or via telephone at (202) 515-2725.
