Delaware professor working on new fertilizer

Dover, Del.-A Delaware State University professor says he is developing a fertilizer that resembles charcoal by combining and cooking leaves, wood chips, and chicken manure. Inventor Dr. Mingxin Guo claims that what he’s calling “biochar” allows soil to absorb more water and nutrients, reducing the need for water. Gou says another benefit is that the chalky substance stays in the soil for hundreds of years. And, he claims, biochar is environmentally friendly by reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
