Allied given extension on emptying tank

Chesapeake, Va.-Allied Terminals has until the end of the month to finish emptying a liquid fertilizer tank at its Chesapeake site, which has city officials and neighbors worried because of the total collapse of another similar tank and the release of 2 million gallons of fertilizer on Nov. 12. Chesapeake Fire Chief Steve Best ordered the tank emptied in 15 days, and then granted the operator an extension (GM Jan. 5, p. 12). “Allied has been given until the end of January to complete the draining of the tank,” spokesman Steve Johnson reported. He didn’t know how much progress Allied had made with less than two weeks to go.
