Calgary-Viterra Inc. said Sept. 11 that fertilizer sales were C$479.1 million for the third quarter ending July 31, 2009, down 8 percent from the year-ago $521.6 million. Viterra said this reflected lower usage rates and unfavorable spring weather conditions. Nine-month sales were $793.5 million, slightly ahead of the year-ago $783.8 million, mainly due to higher prices that were somewhat offset by lower volumes. Company-wide, Viterra reported third-quarter net income of $120.7 million on sales of $2.2 billion, versus the year-ago $166.7 million and $2.2 billion. Nine-month net income was $114 million on sales of $5.2 billion, versus the year-ago $241.5 million and $5.1 billion.
