Pocatello-The U.S. Mine Safety & Health Administration has bestowed its prestigious Sentinel of Safety Award on the J.R. Simplot Company’s Smoky Canyon Mine in Southeast Idaho’s Caribou County. The annual award is designed to stimulate greater interest in safety at potentially dangerous mining operations and encourage the nation’s mining industry to develop more effective accident prevention programs. Smoky Canyon Mine Manager Dennis Facer credited his workers at the open pit phosphate mine with achieving the recognition. “I’m very proud of our employees for earning such a great safety record. We have had zero major incidents for quite a few years now, and I think it’s a noteworthy achievement,” Facer said. Simplot’s mine workers have made strong personal commitments to a special assessment program started several years ago to improve safety at the Smoky Canyon site near the Wyoming border, he added. “Everyone here has bought into doing what is necessary to run an accident-free mine.”
