Ammonium nitrate banned in Afghanistan

Kabul-On Jan. 22, President Hamid Karzai’s office was reported to have issued a decree banning the use, production, storage, purchase, or sale of ammonium nitrate. Investigations have shown that the product has been used by militants in recent bombings. Press reports say that according to Globalsecurity.org, a security think tank, some 95 percent of the terrorist bombs used in the country are made from ammonium nitrate. Farmers are being urged to switch to urea.
