Ammonia tanker driver dies in Idaho rollover

Lewiston, Idaho-The driver of a tractor-tanker rig carrying 8,700 gallons of anhydrous ammonium died in his cab of undetermined injuries after he apparently lost control while taking a left-hand corner on a county road Monday morning Oct. 4. Idaho State Police investigation officer Lt. Allen Oswald told Green Markets the nature of the injuries suffered by Klay McCrady won’t be known until there is a determination by the coroner. But Oswald said although the tanker tipped over during the crash, it didn’t spill any of its contents. “The tank maintained its integrity,” Oswald reported. “We had a little bit coming out of the top pressure valve. But it otherwise stayed together pretty well for us.” McCrady, 50, Ritzville, Wash., was driving for CHS Inc. of Minnesota heading eastbound into Idaho on Uniontown road 2 miles west of US95 in Latah County, apparently to make a delivery. Oswald said there were indications that speed may have been a factor. The rural road was completely blocked for nine hours. CHS hadn’t responded to requests for additional information by press time.
