Lakeland, Fla.-The 800 acres of the Tenoroc Fish Management area, also known as the old Tenoroc phosphate mine near here, is being turned into wetlands under a $2 million environmental facelift managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). As explained by agency officials, the old Tenoroc site operated before reclamation of phosphate mine land was mandatory. The project is expected to help with the cleanup of the Peace River, which as part of the site flows from Polk County to Charlotte Harbor and serves as a source of drinking water.
