OCI reports 1Q results, DSM deal to close June 1

Cairo-Orascom Construction Industries’ (OCI) fertilizer group sold 308,000 mt of urea and 132,000 mt of ammonia during the first quarter ending March 31, 2010. Despite a softening of prices during the second quarter, OCI said it is optimistic that market conditions for nitrogen-based fertilizers will improve during the latter part of 2010. OCI reports that its plan to buy Royal DSM N.V.’s agro and melamine businesses was approved by the European Union May 25 and should close June 1. As a result, OCI says it will have a customer base in the European markets and will be able to sell a higher class of nitrogens, including calcium ammonium nitrate, UAN, and ammonium sulfate. OCI said the fertilizer group continues on-track with its announced US$200 million capital expenditure initiative, which includes the upgrade of Egyptian Fertilizers Co.’s annual urea production capacity from 1.3 million mt to 1.6 million mt, the construction of a new ammonium sulfate line with an annual production capacity of 300,000 mt, and a new UAN line with an annual production capacity of 325,000 mt. Construction on the Sorfert, Algeria, complex continues to progress on-track, with the plant 92.5 percent complete as of the end of April. Commissioning of the new plant is scheduled to begin later this year, with full production beginning early next year. Company-wide, OCI reported a 10.4 percent increase in net income, to US$116.6 million versus the year-ago $105.7 million. Sales were up 19.1 percent, to $985.5 million from the year-ago $827.8 million.
