Dyno Nobel plans more layoffs at Port Ewen

Port Ewen, N.Y.-Dyno Nobel has announced intentions to go ahead with a planned layoff of approximately 40 employees because of a continuing decline in business at its Port Ewen initiation systems plant. An announcement from Dyno Nobel’s headquarters in Salt Lake City said the layoffs are the result of a review of manufacturing needs at the plant, and that the layoffs follow a phased manufacturing reduction plan initiated over the past 12 months due to diminishing customer demand for the electric detonator product line manufactured at the site. A small staff will remain to continue the manufacturing operations and existing distribution activities. Any environmental remediation obligations will continue to be addressed by Dyno Nobel. Tim Suydam, Dyno Nobel’s vice president, manufacturing – initiation systems, said customers would continue to be supplied from Dyno Nobel’s other plants, including the plant at Simsbury, Conn. Dyno Nobel acquired the site from Hercules in 1985. Dyno Nobel also said that the Ashland Inc. sale of two of its manufacturing lines in Louisiana, Mo., will not affect the company’s operations, located adjacent to what is being acquired by Perstorp Polyols Inc. of Toledo, Ohio. The statement said there will be no material impact even though Dyno Nobel operates a plant next door with 55 employees.
