Washington-Fertilizer consumption for the fertilizer year 2005/06 was off 2.6 percent, according to the just-released Commercial Fertilizers 2006, a cooperative publication of The Fertilizer Institute and the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials. Gross tonnage for the 2005/06 year was 53.9 million material st, versus the prior year’s 55.3 million st. Of the major nutrients, potash saw the biggest drop at 8.7 percent, to 4.7 million nutrient st from the prior year’s 5.2 million. Phosphates were off 3.4 percent, to 4.5 million st from the prior year 4.6 million, while nitrogen was off 2.4 percent, to 12.0 million from 12.3 million. The total drop on a nutrient ton basis was 4.1 percent, to 21.2 million st, down from 22.1 million. Commercial Fertilizers 2006 is $30 for TFI or AAPFCO members and $100 for non-members.
