Florida county changes proposed fertilizer ordinance

Sarasota, Fla.-The Sarasota, Fla., Board of County Commissioners on July 14 changed a controversial “no mow” zone in a proposed fertilizer ordinance after encountering strong public opposition. The no mow provision, which would create a six-foot setback from all bodies of water, would be voluntary for all existing homes but would be mandatory for all new developments. The ordinance would set phosphate levels for fertilizers at 2 percent and 50 percent for slow-release nitrogen products. The commission was scheduled to hold another public hearing on Aug. 27. A date for a final vote was not set.
