Legend mine on fast track, needs no EIS

Melbourne-Legend International Holdings Inc. reports progress on its D-Tree North property, with phosphate rock production on schedule for the fourth quarter. Legend says the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management has recently decided that the proposed mine can be assessed without an Environmental Impact Statement. Instead, said Legend, an environmental management plan will be used and has already been submitted. A decision on the plan is expected soon. The Queensland government recently assigned a case manager to the project to help streamline the approvals process so as to open to the way for the 1,500 construction jobs that will be created. The project, 20 percent owned by Mt. Isa Metals and 80 percent by Legend, is expected to produce 500,000 mt/y.
