Washington-The Sulphur Institute (TSI) announced Nov. 18 that Sinochem Fertilizer Co. (Sinofert) has joined the organization. Sinofert, the largest fertilizer company in China, is one of the largest sulfur importers and consumers in that country. “Sinofert is committed to deliver value to China’s fertilizer industry and farmers,” said Li Qiubing, Sinofert chief operating officer. “We recognize TSI’s benefits for all the members and support the organization’s work.” Sinofert is the second Chinese company to become a member of TSI. Catherine Randazzo, TSI’s president and CEO, noted the importance of China, not only to the global market, but most importantly to the sulfur and fertilizer industries. Highlighting China’s role, she remarked, “China imported a record 7.7 million tons of sulfur from January to July 2009, assuring its position as the largest importer and consumer of sulfur along with being the largest producer and consumer of phosphate fertilizers – it is also sulfur’s largest market. Sinofert is well-established in these businesses and recognizes that TSI can provide value and many benefits to its members.” Founded in 1960, TSI is an international non-profit trade association representing companies engaged in producing, buying, selling, handling, transporting, or adding value to sulfur anywhere in the world. Members are based in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
