Two hurt, liquid fert spilled in Indiana train wreck

Indianapolis-Authorities are investigating a crash between two trains that occurred Sunday, Jan. 6. Some 100-plus cars rolled out of a yard and collided with a moving train. Two workers were reported to be injured and some 35 railcars derailed, with several thousand gallons of soybean oil, diesel fuel, lubricant oil, and liquid fertilizer spilling. A spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Emergency Management (IDEM) told Green Markets that 7,000-10,000 gallons of liquid fertilizer spilled, with some running into a ditch and a small creek. IDEM said a local paper erroneously reported that ammonium nitrate was spilled. There was no word on what kind of liquid fertilizer was involved, but IDEM said it was not volatile. The runaway cars and the train are owned by CSX Railroad. CSX said Jan. 10 that the cleanup is still ongoing and had been impacted by bad weather.
